The 4th Llanberis Film Festival will take place over the weekend of the 7th - 9th March 2008. Building on previous years' success, LLAMFF 2008 is going to showcase even more outstanding films, from classic archive material to world premieres, and entries from big names and new comers in the world of mountain spirit and culture to our 2nd International Mountain Film Competition. We are excited about the tremendous list of speakers coming to spin yarns, lose you in the wildest, highest, most sublime places, inform and challenge festival goers - we think you will be too. BEST OF KENDAL FILMS

EIGER SPEED RIDING ACRO-BASE-
The French paragliding flyers of the team Acro-Base present in their short film “Speed Riding Eiger”, which shows the first speed flying descent at the Eiger’s north face. Speed flying is a combination between paragliding and skiing. The movie is completely filmed with a helmet camera of one of the pilots. These scenes belong to the most sensational extreme sport shots of the last few years.

FRANKLIN'S LOST EXPEDITION Peter Bate and John Murray-
The story of one of the greatest tragedies in the history of exploration, combined with the quest for one of the most important undiscovered shipwrecks in the world. John Franklin's doomed expedition disappeared in the 1840's while searching for the North West Passage. This film has exclusive access to a three year scientific search for Franklin's ship HMS Terror.

AMA DABLAM 4 GO HIGH Paul Crosby-
A tale of two lads from Kendal who join forces with two friends from America and Australia to attempt Ama Dablam Alpine style on a shoe string. The film follows the team’s trials and tribulations trying to get around guided parties and endless miles of fixed ropes - an everyday story of old fashioned adventure.

KING LINES Pewter Mortimer-
The film follows rock climbing super star Chris Sharma in search of the planet’s greatest climbs, from boulders in South America to European limestone. The film is also an intimate study of Chris, from his earliest climbing as a tiny child to the discovery in Mallorca of his most outrageous project yet.

PSYCHE Alistair Lee-
Ever wondered just how difficult 9a really is? Or just how extreme a Patagonian winter can feel? Alastair Lee, one of Britain's premier film producers, wanted to discover just this when he set out to film his latest creation, Psyche. The result is outstanding and this insight into the world of British extreme has now won two awards, Best Adventure Film and People's Choice, at the annual British Kendal Mountain Film Festival. Get a taste of the action and check out the clips of Steve McClure on his Mutation 9a at Raven's Tor and a winter attempt of Torre Egger by Andy Kirkpatrick and Ian Parnell.

OIL AND WATER PROJECT Seth Warren-
The boys are making their way south, tackling the longest 100% petroleum-free road trip in the world: The Pan-American Highway. The majority of their fuel comes from recycled restaurant fryer grease. The rest comes from grassroots b100 Biodiesel facilities, animal waste oils and homemade vegetable oil from the on board vegetable oil seed press. They have already traveled over 45,000 kilometers without a single drop of gas or diesel.

I CAN DO THAT sSuzie and Carole Madge-
The dream of the “Lipstick Blonds” expedition to ski 7500m Muztag Ata was to combine their passion for adventure with their love of laughter. The heart of Asia is the goal of four friends. The quest is fuelled equally by hardship, tragedy, commitment and fun. Suzy attended the Kendal Film Academy last year.

GASHERBRUM II THE FASTEST SUMMIT Niko Jager and Michael Halberstadt-
Benedik Bohm and Sebastian Haag are up to something completely new in the world of mountaineering: the speed ascent of a major peak followed by a ski descent, which the Germans call “sky running.” In this film, they attemt to sky run to the summit of Gasherbrum II (8,053 m) and descend back to base camp in one day. Accompanied by the thoughts of the legendary mountaineer and extreme skier Hans Kammerlander, the audience gains an unusual insight into the ambience of the Karakorum, as well as the exertions, fears and pleasures of the two young mountaineers.

ARIALIST Brad Lynch-
Aerialist is about Dean Potter’s transformation as an aerialist - defined as “an acrobat who performs at height”. Dean practices what he calls the “Three Disciplines”- Free Soloing, High-lining and BASE jumping. The film is also a tribute to Jose Pereyra, Dean’s friend and mentor, who died while climbing in Mexico in 2002. The loss hit Dean when he was at the peak of his speed climbing and alpinism career.

THE BECKONING SILENCE Louise Osmand, Darlow Smithson-
Based on the bestselling book of the same name, The Beckoning Silence follows mountain climber Joe Simpson as he takes on one of toughest challenges of his career. Fresh from his horrific ordeal in the Peruvian Andes--as recounted in the Oscar-winning documentary "Touching The Void"--Simpson attempts to ascend the treacherous North Face of the Eiger, a mountain that has claimed the lives of more than 60 people. Faced with growing anxiety and doubt, Simpson pushes onward and upward in his unyielding quest to traverse some of the world's most inhospitable terrain. The Beckoning Silence is a powerful testament to the endurance of the human spirit in extreme conditions.

Amazing freeriding sequences from Alska and breathtaking paragliding acrobatics show where snowboarders Ueli Kestenholz and paragliding pilot Mathias Roten got their vasic skills for speedriding. They take freeriding intoo a new dimension. Impossible lines are rideable simply by flying over massive cliffs and seracs. Fascinating footage was captured as they went for their ultimate goal - descending the world famous Swiss mountains Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Basejumper Ueli Gegenschatz, mountaineer Stephen Seigrist, and Skydiver Stefan Klaus show their perspective of the 'playground' Eiger. THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN Direcetd by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn, Igloolik Isuma production -
January 1922. With powerful forces of a new century pressing in around them, Danish explorer and scientist Knud Rasmussen visits the isolated camp of the great Iglulik shaman, Aua. For Rasmussen and his protégé, the young anthropologist, Therkel Mathiassen, arriving at Aua’s family camp is like falling into Paradise, and arctic Garden of Eden with an intoxicating mix of spiritual and physical vitality, joyful intelligence and exuberant generosity. What the Danes don’t realize is Aua’s temporary fortress of beauty and tranquillity stands surrounded by the steamroller of the twentieth century; the introduction of Inuit-language Christian bibles, increasing dependence on foreign trade goods and the first police investigation of a murder of a white man. Nevertheless, the nomadic Inuit can’t stay in one place even if there’s nowhere safe to go.

PORTALS FOR MORTALS Kate Potter, Sera Irvine-
Llamff co-founder, Kate Potter , and Llamff regular, Sera Irvine have one of this year¹s surprise entries in the film competition. Make what you will of the film from this review by another co-Llamffite, Mark Lynden. The supporting cast is superlative, all the way from Potter's neurotic turn as Martinez, to Brown's purring hit-man Brent Jones. There's simply not a false note to be found anywhere. Although the film really rediscovers the film noir movement the entire look of PORTALS FOR MORTALS surpasses noir to a remarkable degree. The appearance of Parkin's Milan Babic simply adds to the utter desolation that seeps from every pore of this motion picture. It is an audacious foray into the short film genre, which is given a sharp edge from start to finish by directors Irvine/Potter.

CARRY ON...UP THE KHYBER Gerald Thomas-
Set in colonial British India in 1895 and filmed on Snowdon (see plaque outside Electric Mountain!) this is one of the very best films in the Carry On series. With the Khasi of Kalabar leading the natives in a revolt against the British, the cosy life of Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond looks set to come to a bloody end. Will the 3rd Foot and Mouth Regiment regain their fearsome "Devils in skirts" reputation or will the revelation that they wear underwear under their skirts be their downfall?

DON WHILLANS MYTH & LEGEND Introduced by Leo Dickinson and Derek Walker-
Don Whillans was one of the leading rock climbers of his generation. This film examines Don's gritstone horrors, his hard routes in Wales, then follows him to the Alps and beyond on several of his epic expeditions. But its also focuses on Don's unique humour, his devastating oneliners that pricked pomposity wherever he found it and poked fun at those who deserved it. Don may have died 20 years ago but the myth surrounding Whillans can still be heard whenever climbers reminisce about a time when hard men were hard and legends were being made. Perhaps his partner Joe Brown best sums him up, "Don was unique".

MIKLOS KHOOR'S VISION OF THE INCA MAYA CULTURE IN HUNGARY Lilla Khoor & Will Potter-
Miklos Khoor considers himself a scientist and the discoverer of prehistoric rock carvings and sculptures, and has claimed since the early 1980s that they are the evidence of an ancient Inca culture in Hungary. His work is documented in detailed sketchbooks, which show stones, rocks and cliffs that are presented as monumental figurative carvings. He has a large collection of stones; found on the streets of Budapest, in the Hungarian landscape and in caves - places of his fieldwork that he calls cult sites. He asserts that the carvings and sstones are prehistoric sculptures. He insists that they are evidence of a human civilisation hitherto unrecognized by history, and that therefore Hungarian history and world history should be rewritten. The video presents the work and discourse of Miklos Khoor through the video. He has positioned himself as an outsider of the State, its politics and official theory. Miklos Khoor's work points to a singular construction of a highly personal and subjective reality.

Conflict Tiger Sasha Snow Film Production (60) In the forests of the Russian Far East, an inexperienced and foolhardy poacher triggers an infamous series of tiger attacks on people. FROM NOWHERE TO THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE John Silvester, Alun Hughes-
Because it's so refreshing and still one of the best true adventure films ever made, although it was shown at the very first LLAMFF, we have decided to show it again. Local Pilot John Silvester & local filmmaker Alun Hughes set out to fly the length of the Himalaya from a ridge-top highway in western Nepal all the way to the flanks of Everest on a dual paraglider. Using rudimentary means of filming - for example, dangling the camera from a parachute strap - this 'fly in the sky' documentary contrasts the laid-back Silvester with the increasingly terrified Hughes as they encounter treacherous winds and alarming drops in altitude.

JUMP! Allen Hill-
Back by popular demand especially for the leap year, Jump! will be screened both in a main venue and projected onto the Prince of Wales pub's white wall from Pete's Eats cafe. Long before the concept of "extreme sports" made it into the mainstream, in the early 19th century, Czech daredevils were practicing the unique sport of tower jumping. It is now a niche sub-sport of the more daring rock-climbers in an area known as the "Czech Paradise", a rare landscape marked by hundreds of sandstone pillars rising hundreds of feet in the air. Breathtaking!

THE RACE Uli Wiesmeier-
A short, beautifully shot film documenting a race between a climber and a paraglider pilot top the top of a cliff face in the Dolomites.

THE GUARDS OF MOUNT ARARAT -
The Guards of Mounta Ararat The 12 yaer old Kurdish nomad Ehran Ceven wants to become an Ararat mountain guide just like his famous uncle. To realise his dream, Ehran has to climb the biblical giant in the Anatolian East of Turkey to its summit at 5165 m. A courage challenge for the young shepherd who gives us an insight into the lives of the nomadic shepherds ‘guarding’ Mount Ararat’s slope and Turkish politics.

DRINGO I'R EITHAF Alun Hughes-
One summer with the most promising climber of his generation - Ioan Doyle. He's only been climbing for a year, but is already regarded as one of the best British climbers for his age. His obsession is giving Catrin, his mother, nightmares. Can she let him follow his dream as he ventures further into his extrme world? Culminating in a trip to America, Ioan goes to prove himself on some of the world's biggest climbs in Yosemite California with his climbing partner, Mills, who has a fear of heights!

THE TOWERS OF PAINE Introduced by Leo Dickinson, Ian McNaught Davies, Derek Walker-
In October 1962 a very strong climbing team left Britain sailing from Liverpool for the 10,000 mile journey to distant Patagonia. Little did they realize as they passed through the Caribbean that, not far away, the Cuban Missile Crisis between Kennedy & Khrushchev was reaching its climax. 'There are many great climbers in the world but few are geniuses - Don Whillans was one of them.' Chris Bonington. When a strong Italian team arrived with the same objective, Don Whillans vented his frustration 'It appeared that they'd even promised the Pope that they would climb the Central Tower. It was news to me that the Pope was interested in climbing I thought he was high enough up already...' he renamed Amando Aste - the Italian leader - 'Nasty aste'. The name stuck. More Whillans one liners and lovely reminiscences by Chris throughout. The film shows two reconstructions when both Don & Chris fell down the towers when the hemp ropes snapped. And there is this image of Don hung like a gorilla... This extraordinary film has been re-mastered from the original Kodachrome and was Chris Bonington's favourite film at this years Kendal Film Festival. 'Well he would say that wouldn't he - he was in it!'

a collectin of short films that provide a rip-roaring ride into the heart and soul of the British climbing experience. Travelling far and wide aross our magical isle we've sarched out the best climbers on all types of rock in all sorts of peril. Whilst full of first ascents and great action, the films also offer a rich blend of humour and touching observation. We will be showing a selection of the short films over the weekend.

A short film influenced by parcour, Wren's memories and a big part of his life, set in the hills of Rhiwlas and Bangor.

DUET Kieth Partridge-
The lives of the birdmen of St Kilda were intertwined with those of the sea-cliff birds they hunted. However, increasing contact with the wider world disrupted the old rhythms and balances. St Kilda was evacuated in 1930, but its story continues to resonate through many cultures today. Told in aerial dance, Duet represents the ebb and flow in a relationship between two lovers flying in the face of a dangerous existence

Ian Parnell and Chris Cubitt tackle the awesome Great White Fright. It is Chris's first bold adventure after a serious accident.

SIGUR ROS, HEIMA (HOMELAND) -
The band is known for its ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi’s falsetto voice. Last year, in the endless magic hour of the Icelandic summer, Sigur Rós played a series of concerts around their homeland. This film explores the way Sigur Rós’s music relates to, and is influenced by, their environment has been reduced to a journalistic cliché about glacial majesty and fire and ice, but there is no doubt that the band are inextricably linked to the land in which they were forged. And the decision to film this first-ever Sigur Rós film in Iceland was, in the end, ineluctable.

SIMON YATES The Uttermost Part of the Earth, an illustrated presentatioon-
Simon is best known as a result of his epic rescue of Joe Simpson, described in Joe's award winning book 'Touching The Void' and the film of the same name. Over the last twenty five years Simon has climbed extensively around the world, concentrating on exploratory mountaineering. He has made many first ascents in the Himalayas and Andes. His first book - 'Against The Wall' was published to critical acclaim in 1997 and was runner up in The Boardman Tasker Award for mountain literature. His second – ‘The Flame of Adventure’ was published in November 2001. Most recently he has been concentrating his attentions on The Cordillera Darwin range of mountains in Chilean Tierra del Fuego – one the most remote chain of mountains outside of the Polar Regions, that can only be accessed from the sea. Simon details his sailing and climbing adventures from five expeditions in his usual dry, humorous style accompanied by stunning images from this rarely visited region.

CHRIS DAVIS Between a Sausage and a Hard Place-
Chris Davies has been bouldering in and around mainland Europe for around 12 years now. Chris' talk includes tales of hardcore conquests, exquisite destinations, outrageous anecdotes (including 'Albarracin' - 'Sandstone with your Sausage, Sir?') and some very colourful characters. Oh, and some great photographs of some of the more famous boulder problems known throughout our compact culture.

NICK BULLOCK Unruly, Madly, Steeply...-
Pics, music and talk about routes in the winter Alps, Gogarth, the Lleyn Peninsular and Kalanka North Face in India.

LOUISE TURNER -
Louise Thomas now Turner is a climber and guide who has been lucky enough to share her passion for climbing and mountains with her partner, Twid. Together they have climbed rock, ice and new routes on 'big walls' in six continents.. She has now embarked on the bigger adventure of motherhood Is this enough

ANDY CAVE Wild is the Wind - Explorations in Patagonia-
Andy recounts the highs and the lows of four recent holidays in the mountains of Patagonia. He and his mates have been living with gauchos, sleeping in snow caves, dancing in foam filled nightclubs and occasionally even going climbing. Stunning images and outlandish tales.

CELIA BULL The Magic Compass-
Celia talks of how 10 years ago, life takes a wild turn off its plotted track, throwing her in the path of icebergs and albatross, inciting a dream to have her own boat and explore Antarctica, South Georgia,Falklands and the Patagonia Channels. The magic compass then takes another mad spin: son Dylan takes the stage and she tells of the challenges and decisions as a single parent that lead her and Dylan to embark on their present adventure with their new boat, Selkie.

TIM EMMETT Terminal Tim-
Lecture title - "Terminal Tim" - Tales of the Extremmett kind! After serving his apprenticeship in and around Llanberis in the late 90's, Tim s adventures have continued to multiply at an enthusiastic rate! After BASE jumping into LLamff from a paraglider two years ago, Tim went on the race Clarkson up the Verdon gorge. Nominated for the Piolet D'or with Ian Parnell for their super alpine ascent of Kedar Dome in the Indian Himalayas, first descent of Naranjo De Bulnes in the picos de Europa, and more recently BASE jumping into a 330ft cave in Oman for a Range Rover commercial, Tims presentation is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

At the limit of the world lies the Patagonian Ice Cap - 9000 square miles of giant glaciers and volcanic peaks scoured by storms that rush north from Cape Horn and Antarctica and from the west by the roaring forties. Three British mountaineers - Eric Jones, Mick Coffey and Leo Dickinson along with Argentineam Ernesto O'Reilly set out to cross the barren wildersness of Chile and Argentina - one of the least explored places on earth. In October 1962 a very strong climbing team left Britain sailing from Liverpool for the 10,000 mile journey to distant Patagonia. Little did they realize as they passed through the Caribbean that, not far away, the Cuban Missile Crisis between Kennedy & Khrushchev was reaching its climax. 'There are many great climbers in the world but few are geniuses - Don Whillans was one of them.' Chris Bonington. When a strong Italian team arrived with the same objective, Don Whillans vented his frustration 'It appeared that they'd even promised the Pope that they would climb the Central Tower. It was news to me that the Pope was interested in climbing I thought he was high enough up already...' he renamed Amando Aste - the Italian leader - 'Nasty aste'. The name stuck. More Whillans one liners and lovely reminiscences by Chris throughout. The film shows two reconstructions when both Don & Chris fell down the towers when the hemp ropes snapped. And there is this image of Don hung like a gorilla... This extraordinary film has been re-mastered from the original Kodachrome and was Chris Bonington's favourite film at this years Kendal Film Festival. Sam has lived in Caernarfon for most of his life, enjoying the activities that the sea, the mountains and the skies of Snowdonia have to offer. Sailing and windsuring gave way to rock climbing and mountaineering; complemented, more recently, by paragliding. He is a world traveller and has been a member of several expeditions - three to Mt. Everest. Since 1973 he has been a National Park Warden with responsibilities in Northern Snowdonia. Presentations in Welsh, English or both.

Over the weekend of the film festival the Beacon will be running a Fun Bouldering Comp. If you feel the need for a bit of exercise after all those lectures then come up and give it a go.
