EXHIBITIONS/ACTIVITIES PROGRAMME

John Redhead

John RedheadJohn Redhead will be having a multi media intervention - Remains of Languedoc.

John Redhead really doesn't need an introduction, he is unique, outspoken and controversial. His book 'One for The Crow' was a milestone in the climbing/art genre.

Remains of Languedoc is an orchestrated dialogue with the landscape and rocks.

A multimedia intervention, searching for fragments of riddle and fact across the landscape of the Albigensian Crusade. The mountain landscape was the sacred home of the Cathars and perhaps its 'geometry' still holds their faith... and wisdom, symbol and myth. Affecting all with a sense of place and mystery, are the mountains a living embodiment of their beliefs?

The mountain terrain of Languedoc, southern France, was the area chosen by the Cathars, to settle. The Cathars were a Zarathrousrian, early Christian, Gnostic religeous sect. The hilltop settlements became the fortress against Catholic oppressors. Bringing the 'Book of Love' from the east, they became a heretical power that forced the pope to send a crusade to rid them from the land. This is a land steeped in legends connected to whatever 'The Holy Grail' is.

From field recordings of Montsegur and Rosslyn, John hopes an impossible music will emerge, a textual song, as part of a forensic together with words and images.

We all have an innate need to feel and try to understand our nature within our surroundings. Is it easier to conjure our 'true' selves in an area of utmost passivity and tranquility, or is the more 'active' self within the world a truer realisation...? That the rocks are our home is an easy connection as regards the Cathars - not only for protection in the physical form but also, seemingly, as a medium for enlightenment and exploration in the metaphysical.

Philip Gibson

Philip GibsonPhil's CV is an expansive one, he has designed for Wedgwood and Moorcroft at one end of the spectrum, while he has also drawn some amazing pictures of mountains and rock outcrops at the other end. This is where most people coming to LLAMFF would recognise his work, having had it printed in many a guidebook. Phil will be exhibiting some of his larger works in this medium.
